Eskişehir, an inland city, is a cen-
tre for aquatic sports.
What is sport to you? How
was it a part of your life?
“Sport for me is primarily a
means for socialization. We learn
through sports that we cannot
win unless we are a part of the
game, share the ball and pay re-
gard to the success of others. Like
everybody else, I used to play
football in the neighbourhood.
But unlike all, I insisted that we
should have uniforms and play
the game according to its rules.
I organized a tiptop team of the
neighbourhood. But I broke a leg
playing and it was the end of foot-
ball and sports for me. Though,
throughout my life, I continued
with making organizations for
others to be involved in sports.”
Would you tell us about
what you did for sports
during your presidency of
the Eskişehir Academy of
Economics and Commercial
Sciences, your rectorship
of Anadolu University and
Eskişehir metropolitan may-
oralty, where you intro-
duced a package of ‘Urban
Development Projects’
since 1999?
I have always supported am-
ateur sports during my terms as
the mayor. Hundreds of young-
sters find an opportunity to prac-
tice sports in aquatics, sailing,
swimming, canoeing, athletics,
handball and underwater pho-
tography. We own the biggest ca-
noe park in Turkey and we organ-
ized a Balkan championship in
Eskişehir. We enabled many peo-
ple of all ages and genders to
practice aquatics. The activities
we have started five years ago
in cooperation with the schools
and clubs are now bearing fruit.

Eskişehir’i bir Anadolu kenti gö-
rünümünden çıkartıp, modern bir
Avrupa şehri haline dönüştüren
Büyükerşen’in spora ve sporcu-
ya bakışı da hayli ilginç. Bu yönü
pek bilinmeyen, küçüklüğünde
futbol oynamış, Eskişehirspor’un
büyüyüp gelişmesinde önem-
li katkıları olmuş efsane başkan
ile sporu konuştuk. Yıllar önce
Eskişehirspor için çizdiği yol ha-
ritasının hayata geçirilememesine
hala üzülen Başkan Büyükerşen,
denizi olmayan kenti bir su spor-
ları merkezine dönüştürmenin
mutluluğunu yaşadığını da her fır-
satta dile getiriyor.
Spor sizin için nedir?
Küçüklüğünüzden günümü-
ze sporun yaşamınızda nasıl bir
yeri oldu?
“Spor benim için her şeyden
önce sosyalleşmenin bir aracı-
dır. Biz başkalarıyla topu paylaş-
mayı, oyunun bir parçası olma-
yı, başkalarının kazanmasını gö-
zetmediğimiz sürece bizim de ka-
zanamayacağımızı spor vasıtasıy-
la öğreniriz. Küçükken herkes gibi
mahallede futbol oynamaya me-
raklıydım. Ama herkesten farklı
olarak, formalarımız olsun, işi ku-
rallarına uygun yapalım diye de ıs-
rarlıydım. Mahallede neredeyse
dört başı mamur bir takım organi-
ze ettim. Ama daha ilk maçlardan
birinde bacağımı kırdım. Böylelikle
çok küçük yaşta spor hayatım bitti.
Sonra, genellikle başkalarının spor
yapması için organizasyonlar dü-
zenlemekle geçti hayatım.”

rof. Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen
is a mayor whose name has
been integrated with Eskişehir.
The man who turned the outlook
of Eskişehir from an Anatolian
city to a European one, views
sports and athletes in a differ-
ent and interesting way. It is not
much known, but he has played
football as a youngster. We had
an interview with the legendary
Mayor, who has made great con-
tributions to the growth and de-
velopment of Eskişehir, on sports.
