Bundan 15 gün sonra askere
giden kahramanımız, Giresun
Jandarma Alayı’ndaki güreş
seçmelerinde herkesi yene-
rek birinci olmasının ardından
Ankara’ya Jandarma Gücü’ne
gönderildi. O zamanlar
genç bir teğmen olan Yücel
Seçkiner kendisine hem arka-
daşlık ham hocalık yaptı. Diğer
hocası Nuri Turan da onun
müthiş yeteneğinin farkınday-
dı, “Senden bir şeyler olacak,
çalışmalarını aksatma” diyor-
du, Silahlı Kuvvetlerde çeşit-
li şampiyonalarda grekoromen
hem de serbest stilde birinci-
likler aldı.
27 Mayıs 1960’da terhis olan
Ahmet Ayık’ı kadrolarına kat-
mak isteyen kulüpler birbirle-
ri ile yarışmaktaydı. O zaman-
lar Şekerspor’u Yaşar Doğu,
Toprakspor’u (şimdiki TMO)
Celal Atik çalıştırıyordu. İkisi
de kendisini isterken, o terci-
hini Yaşar Hoca’dan yana kul-
lanıyordu. Bir süre sonra
babasının rahatsızlı-
ğından dolayı köyüne
döndü. Yaşar Doğu,
şampiyon olacağına
adı gibi inandığı
bu kabiliyetli
gence, ar-
kasından
geri dönmesi için mektup-
lar gönderdi ama razı ede-
medi. 8 Ocak 1961 tarihinde
Ankara’da geçirdiği kalp kri-
zi sonrası vefat eden Türk gü-
reşinin efsane ismi Doğu, çok
sevdiği öğrencisinin şam-
piyonluğunu görememiş-
ti. Aynı yılın Ağustos ayında
köye gelerek anne ve babası-
nı ikna eden yetkililer ailesin-
den gerekli izni aldılar. Ahmet
Ayık Kayseri’de Hava İkmal
Merkezi Hava Gücü Tayyare
Fabrikası’nda çalışmaya baş-
ladı. 1962 yılında milli takı-
ma girerek Belgrat’ta yapılan
Adriyatik Kupası’nda 87 kiloda
ikinci oldu. Bu onun uluslara-
rası alandaki ilk önemli dere-
cesiydi. Artık mil-
li takım-
daydı.

sent to Ankara to wrestle for
the Jandarma Gücü club.
Yücel Seçkiner, a young lieu-
tenant at the time, became his
coach and a friend. His oth-
er coach, Nuri Turan also was
very aware of his terrific tal-
ent and kept saying “You’re
going to be something… Don’t
you hamper your training! ”
He won many championships
of the Armed Forces both in
Greco-Roman and freestyle.
The clubs were racing against
each other to transfer Ahmet
Ayık, demobilized on 27 May
1960. In those days Şekerspor
Club was being coached by
Yaşar Doğu and Toprakspor
(later named TMO) by Celal
Atik. Both coaches wanted
him but he preferred to work
with Coach Yaşar. A while lat-
er he returned to his village
due to his father’s ill-
ness. Yaşar Doğu,
just as sure
as he knew
his name that
Ayık would be-
come a world
champi-
on, wrote
him many
letters
for his
return, to no avail. The leg-
endary name in the Turkish
wrestling Yaşar Doğu died on
8 January 1961 due to a heart
disease. He was not meant to
see the championships of his
beloved student. Some admin-
istrators visiting the village
managed to convince his fam-
ily for his return. Ahmet Ayık
started to work at the airplane
factory of the Air Supply and
Maintenance Centre in Kayseri.
In 1962, he made the National
Team and captured a second
place in 87 kg at the Adriatic
Cup held in Belgrade. This was
his first important internation-
al achievement. He was now
in the National Team and he
lived in Ankara. Next year he
accomplished a fifth place in
the World Championships. In
a friendly competition held
in Konya in 1963, he beat-
ed his opponent by fall on the
first day and by 18 points dif-
ference on the second day.
Within the same year he be-
came the champion at the
Naples Mediterranean Games
in freestyle 97 kg. A year later,
in 1964, beating his Bulgarian
opponent by fall in finals, he
won the gold medal at the
Balkans Championship held
in Köstence, Romania. He was
surely up on his way to in-
clude his name among the
legends of Turkish wrestling.
