Okçuluk yarışması ilk kez Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda Padişah Fatih Sultan Mehmet döneminde
düzenlenmiştir. 1451-1481 yılları arasında Osmanlı padişahı olan Sultan 2. Mehmet zamanında
okçuluk yarışma kuralları hazırlanmış ve yarışma sahaları yapılmıştır. İstanbul’un fethinden
sonra Sultan 2. Mehmet ‘Ok Meydanı’ diye adlandırılan okçuluk alanını genişletmiş ve yeni
düzenlemelerle daha güzel hale getirmiştir. Tarihsel dokümanlarda en çok dikkat çeken iki isim,
Tozkoparan İsmail ve Bursalı Şüca’dır. Tarihsel Osmanlı yayları 800-900 metreye atış yapabilirken,
şu anki modern yayların bu mesafelere atış yapabilmesi pek mümkün değildir.
The archery contest was organized for the first time during the reign of Sultan Mehmet the
Conqueror in the Ottoman Empire. Archery contest rules were specified and the competition sites
were set during the reign of Sultan Mehmet II, the Ottoman sultan between 1451 and 1481. After
the conquest of Istanbul, Sultan Mehmet II expanded and re-arranged the archery area called Ok
Meydanı (Archery Square) in İstanbul. The two most notable names of famous archers in historical
documents are Tozkoparan Ismail and Şüca from Bursa. Historical Ottoman bows could shoot at
800-900 meters; which is not possible for current modern bows.
