Türk güreş sporunun ef-
sane isimlerinden birisiniz.
Sporculuk yaşamınızın ardın-
dan genç yaşta federasyon
başkanı oldunuz. Göreve gel-
diğinizde ne gibi sıkıntılar ya-
şadınız, ne gibi zorluklar-
la karşılaştınız?
“Öncelikle bize göstermiş ol-
duğu ilgiden dolayı Türkiye Milli
Olimpiyat Komitesi’ne çok teşek-
kür ediyorum. Göreve geldiğimiz
günden itibaren iki yıl geçti. Biz bu
süre içerisinde başarılması çok
zor olan işlerin altına imza attık.
Hem idari anlamda hem de spor-
tif başarı anlamında camiamızın
beklentilerini karşıladığımızı dü-
şünüyorum. Ama tabii ki bu kada-
rı yeterli değil. Daha çok çalışarak
Türk güreşini zirveye çıkarmak is-
tiyoruz ve bu zorlu yolda da emin
adımlarla ilerliyoruz. Göreve gel-
diğimizde birtakım sıkıntılarla kar-
şılaştık ama bunlar aşılamayacak
problemler değildi. Başbakanımız
Sayın Recep Tayyip Erdoğan baş-
ta olmak üzere Gençlik ve Spor
Bakanımız Akif Çağatay Kılıç’ın
yanı sıra camiamız, sevenlerimiz
ve en önemli unsur olan milleti-
miz arkamızda durduğu için kısa
süre içerisinde sorunları hallede-
rek dimdik bir şekilde çalışmaları-
mıza devam ediyoruz.”
Türk güreşinin günümüzdeki
durumu hakkında neler söyle-
yeceksiniz? Son dönemde özel-
likle yıldızlarda, gençlerde bir
ışıldama dikkat çekiyor. İşe ta-
bandan mı başladınız?
“Bilinen ve asla inkar edileme-
yecek bir gerçek vardır ki güreş
Türkiye’nin Ata sporudur. Yani gü-
reşte başarı elde edemezseniz
bu topraklarda yaşayan 80 mil-
yon kişinin yüzünü güldüremezsi-
niz. Biz de bunun bilincinde olarak
kolları sıvadık ve işe alt yapıdan
başladık. Çünkü biz günlük değil,
kalıcı başarıların peşinde koşuyo-
ruz. Bunun tek yolu da sağlam bir
altyapı oluşturarak yakın gelecek
içerisinde yıldızlarda, gençlerde
ve büyüklerde her zaman zirveye
oturmaktır. Bütün ulusal müsaba-
kalarımızda minik ve yıldız sporcu-
larımıza malzeme yardımında bu-
lunduk. Türkiye çapında yaklaşık
beş bin malzemeyi (mayo, şort, ti-
şört, çorap) direk sporcunun ken-
disine vererek daha güzel mater-
yallerle antrenmanlarını yapmala-
rını sağladık. Bunun yanında 81 ili-
mizde bulunan kulüplerimize tam
200 güreş minderi göndererek
sporcularımızın rahat ve konforlu
bir ortamda çalışmalarını yapma-
larına yardımcı olduk. İki yıllık ça-
lışmalarımızın meyvelerini de al-
maya başladık. Bulgaristan’daki
Avrupa Şampiyonası’nda
ve Slovakya’daki Dünya
Şampiyonası’nda yıldız güreşçi-
lerimiz bol sayıda madalya kaza-
narak Türk milletini sevince boğ-
dular. Ayrıca, Polonya’da organi-
ze edilen Avrupa Şampiyonası’nda
Genç Erkekler Serbest Güreş Milli
Takımımız da takım klasmanın-
da Avrupa Şampiyonu olarak
uzun yıllar sonra tekrar tarih yaz-
dılar. Bu başarılar bile bizi he-
nüz tatmin etmiyor ve
eminim ki önümüz-
deki süreç içerisinde
daha önemli madal-
yalar kazanacağız.”

answered our questions:
You are one of the legend-
ary names of the Turkish
wrestling. Soon after your
active sporting career, you
were chosen as the President
of the Turkish Wrestling
Federation at a young age.
What kind of difficulties did
you face when you came into
the office?
“First of all, I would like to thank
the Turkish Olympic Committee
for their support. It is two years
now since I took the office. We
have accomplished a lot with-
in that period. I believe we have
been able to meet the expecta-
tions of our community, in both
administrative and sporting sense.
But of course we are not done
yet. We are trying our best to car-
ry the Turkish wrestling back to
the top and we are progressing in
that direction. There were some
difficulties when we took the of-
fice but nothing that we couldn’t
overcome. We carry on with our
endeavours, feeling the support
of Hon. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,
Sports Minister Akif Çağatay
Kılıç, our community and
most importantly the
support of our nation
behind us.”
What will you say
about the current
state of the Turkish
wrestling?
One de-
tects
some glittering recently, espe-
cially at the cadets and the jun-
iors level. Did you start working
at the grassroots?
“One thing is certain and unde-
niable: Wrestling is the tradition-
al sport of Turkey. If you cannot
achieve success in wrestling, you
cannot put a smile on the faces of
the 80 million people living in this
country. Cognizantly, we started
with the grassroots. We are af-
ter a lasting success and the only
way to achieve long-term suc-
cess in cadets, juniors and sen-
iors in the upcoming years, is to
build a sound infrastructure. We
provided more than five thousand
sport equipment like mats, jer-
seys, shorts, t-shirts etc. to all
national competitions at the ca-
det and juniors level. 200 mats
were distributed among the wres-
tling clubs in the 81 Provinces of
our country. Our efforts in the last
two years are now bearing fruit.
Our young wrestlers won many
medals at the Cadet European
Championships in Bulgaria and
Cadet World Championships in
Slovakia, making everyone hap-
py. Our juniors achieved a histori-
cal success as Turkey took Men’s
Freestyle European Champions ti-
tle at Junior European Wrestling
Championships Katowice, Poland.
We are not content with those
achievements and I am sure that
we will win more important med-
als in the near future.”
Is Turkish wrestling
well represented at the
international boards
and commissions?
“Esteemed Ahmet Ayık is rep-
resenting Turkey very well at the
International Wrestling Federation.
Besides serving as FILA Vice-
President, Ahmet Ayık is one of
the best advocates of Turkish
wrestling in the international are-
na. However, he has announced
that he would lay down his of-
fice in 2016 and publicly vouched
