Final turunda dünya şampiyo-
naları finalinde iki kez kaybet-
tiği Macar Imre Polyak’ı sayıy-
la yenerek şampiyon oldu. 1955
ve 1958’deki dünya ikincilikleri-
nin yanına Olimpiyat altın madal-
yasını ekledi.
Sille, Roma’daki şampiyonluğun
anısını şöyle anlatıyor:
“Roma cayır cayır yanıyor.
Sporcular dışarıya koydukla-
rı minderde antreman yapıyor-
lar. Mindere avucumuzu koya-
mıyoruz; çünkü çok sıcak. Adil
Güngör’le antreman yaparken
sancılandım. Hemen beni am-
bulansla hastaneye götürdüler.
Konan teşhis: ‘müzmin apandist’.
Ameliyat olmam gerektiğini söy-
lediler. Dört gün hastanede yat-
tım. Kafile idarecilerimiz, beşin-
ci gün hastaneye geldiler. ‘Ya min-
dere çıkarsın, ya da seni ilk uçak-
la Türkiye’ye göndeririz’ dedi-
ler. Orada önüme bir liste uzattılar,
kendi arzumla hastaneden çıktığı-
ma dair imzamı aldılar. Olimpiyat
köyüne bir ciple gittik. Tartıya çık-
tım 66 kiloyum. Bir gün sonra
maçlar başlayacak, dört kilo düş-
mem gerekiyor. Saatlerce sauna-
da kaldım. Dört kiloya yakın düş-
tüm, koşarak odama gittim. Orada
beni ilk karşılayan rahmetli Celal
Atik hocamdı. Ertesi gün tar-
tı 08:00-09:00 arası idi. Yarım kilo
daha fazlam vardı. Kapalı olan sa-
unayı açtırdık. Eşofmanlarımla
saunaya girdim ve kilomu düştüm.
Ancak bizim kantar fazla tarttığı
için diğer bir kantarda tartıldık.
Finalde güreştiğim Macar Imre
Polyak’ı güreş hayatında çır-
pan yegane güreşçi ben ol-
dum. Güreşi 4-1 galip bitirdim
ve Olimpiyat şampiyonu oldum.
Minderden indim, eşofmanla-
rım takım arkadaşım Sadrettin
Özden’in kucağında beraber duşa
giderken ağlayarak sordum: ‘Ben
şampiyon mu oldum?’, Sadrettin
Özden de ağlayarak cevap verdi:
’Evet Müzahir, şampiyon oldun’.
Türkiye’ye dönüyoruz, madalya
kutum kucağımda. Havaalanına
indik; arabada annem, babam
ve şoför olan dayımın oğlu var.
Öne oturdum ve arkaya dönerek
felt a griping pain during training
with Adil Güngör. They prompt-
ly put me in an ambulance and
took me to a hospital. The diag-
nosis was: ‘Chronic Appendicitis.’
They told me I had to undergo an
operation. I stayed in the hospi-
tal for four days. Our team offi-
cials visited me at the hospital on
the fifth day and said, ‘You either
take up to the mat or we will have
to fly you back to Turkey.’ I signed
the discharge papers to leave
the hospital against medical ad-
vice and we went to the Olympic
Village by a jeep. I took the scale
and weighed 66 kilos. I had to lose
4 kilos before the matches to start
the next day. I stayed in the sauna
for hours. I lost almost 4 kilos and
ran to my room. My coach, late
Celal Atik, was there to meet me
first. Weigh-ins was going to take
place between 08:00 and 09:00
hours next morning and I was still
half a kilo overweight. So, we had
the closed sauna opened; I went
in with my tracking suit on and
lost a kilo. I was the only wres-
tler who managed to wrench the
Hungarian wrestler Polyak in his
wrestling life, with whom I wres-
tled in the final round. I won the
match 4-1 on points and became
the Olympic Champion. So, I came
down from the mat and on the
way to the shower with my team-
mate Sadrettin Özler who was car-
rying my tracking suit, I asked him
in tears; ‘Am I the champ now?’
Sadrettin Özler was also crying
and replied: ‘Yes, Müzahir. You are
the Champ!’ We were on our way
back to Turkey and I heldthe medal
box on my lap throughout the flight.
We landed and I went to the car in
which sat my mother, my father
and my cousin who was the driv-
er. I sat in the front of the car and
turning back I gave the medal box
to my father. I gave it to my father
who had asked me to ‘Save our
family honour’ when I had turned
up as the second place holder in
World Championships twice before
and said ‘Here father, I have saved
our family honour’.”
