We must also set our sights on extended participation at 2018
PyeongChang Winter Olympics with a team of a reasonable size.
It is important for the future of Turkish sports that we set these
goals. As the President of Turkish Olympic Committee,
I insistently reiterate this issue on every possible platform. We
must harmonise our sporting management model with those
of the countries advanced in sports. As is known, NOCT has
published a report investigating the administrative structures
of successful countries in sports and shared a strategic plan
with all stakeholders. In this age of communication and
technology, we do not need to invent a new model but must
adapt a successful sports management model into our system.
Otherwise, I’m afraid; we shall continue to spend the huge
funds that amaze our foreign friends, without obtaining any
favourable results.
Lastly, Russia made incredible investments in Sochi to organize
the Winter Olympic Games. Some still criticise and argue whether
it was necessary or not, but they are overlooking something; the
fact that Russia has created a new and modern city there.
A splendid skiing centre was brought in with its modern airport,
highways, high speed railways, hotels, malls, cable cars and
chairlifts. I am sure they will make most of this investment in the
future. Many international congresses and even an F1 circuit are
already planned for Sochi. Regrettably, we did not do well with our
future planning or the legacy aspect of the investments we made
for the winter sports in Erzurum. I think, even this comparison on
its own, will constitute a lesson for future.

Spor modelimizi de, sporda ileri ülkelerin modelleriyle
uyumlu hale dönüştürmemiz gerekiyor. Bilindiği gibi,
TMOK olarak geçtiğimiz yıl önemli bir çalışmaya imza
atarak sporda ileri ülkelerin yönetim modellerini konu
alan bir raporu paydaşlarımız ile paylaştık. Sözün
kısası, bu iletişim ve teknoloji çağında yeni model
keşfetmeye gerek yok, başarılı bir modeli kendimize
uyarlamalıyız. Aksi durumda, üzülerek belirtmeliyim ki,
yabancı dostların hayret ettikleri büyüklükte bütçeleri
sonuç almaksızın harcamaya devam edip duracağız.
Son olarak, Rusya devleti Kış Olimpiyat Oyunları’nı
düzenleyebilmek için Sochi’ye inanılmaz yatırım
yaptı ve halen daha bazı ortamlarda bunun gerekli
olup olmadığı tartışılıyor. Ancak bir şey göz ardı
ediliyor, Rusya orada modern yeni bir kent inşa etti.
Hızlı treniyle, yüksek standartlı yollarıyla, otelleriyle,
alışveriş merkezleriyle, telesiyej ve teleferikleriyle
mükemmel bir kayak merkezini ülkeye kazandırdı.
Bu yatırımı atıl bırakmayacaklardır. Formula 1
organizasyonu yanında birçok kongre şimdiden Sochi
için planlanmış durumda. Biz ise Erzurum’daki kış
sporları tesislerini inşa ederken maalesef gelecek
planlamasını, yani işin
“ legacy”
yönünü iyi yapamadık.
Bu kıyaslamanın bile gelecek adına önemli bir öğreti
olacağını düşünüyorum.
