on the Asian side and fin-
ished in Dolmabahçe on the
European side. The par tici-
pants crossed the Bosphorus
geçip, Barbaros Bulvarı üze-
rinden Beşiktaş’a indi-
ler ve sahil yolunu izleyerek
Dolmabahçe’deki bitiş noktası-
na kadar yürüdüler.

İlk olarak Tercüman
Gazetesi tarafından 1973
yılında gündeme getirilen
Asya’dan Avrupa’ya mara-
ton fikri, 1978 yılında bir
grup Alman turistin erte-
si yıl İstanbul’u ziyaret ede-
ceği haberiyle alevlendi. Bu
turistlerin özelliği gittikle-
ri ülkelerde maraton koşu-
yor olmalarıydı. Son ola-
rak Mısır’da Nil Maratonu’nu
koşan bu turistlerin ziyare-
ti Avrasya Maratonu fikri-
nin hayata geçirilmesini hız-
landırdı. 1979 yılında ge-
len Alman turistlerin ya-
nında ülkemizin elit atlet-
leri de davet edilerek or-
ganizasyona resmiyet ka-
zandırıldı. Parkur ve trafik-
le ilgili işlemler halledildik-
ten sonra gerekli olan bü-
tün hazırlıklar tamamlan-
dı. 1 Nisan 1979 günü tu-
rist gruptan 34, toplam 74
kişinin katılımıyla Boğaziçi
Köprüsünün 700 met-
re gerisinden ilk Avrasya
Maratonu için start verildi.
Tarihte ilk kez iki kıta arasın-
da bir yarış koşulmuş oldu.
Bu yarışın galibi 2:35:39’luk
derecesiyle Zonguldaklı at-
let Hasan Saylan olmuş-
tu. Maraton önceleri 10, 20
ve 42 kilometrelik üç bö-
lümden oluşurken, ayrı-
ca 15 kilometrelik bir yü-
rüyüş etabı daha eklene-
rek dört farklı etaba çıkarıl-
dı. Büyük yankı uyandıran
ilk yarışın ardından Beden

completed. On 1 April 1979,
with the participation of 74
long-distance runners in-
cluding 34 from the tourist
group, the starting gun for
the first Eurasia Marathon
was fired at the starting
line 700 meters behind
the Bosphorus Bridge. This
was the first race in history
which was run between any
two continents. The win-
ner of this race was Hasan
Saylan, a Turkish long-dis-
tance runner from the prov-
ince of Zonguldak, with
an official time of 2:35:39.
Formerly, the Marathon
consisted of three different
races (10 km, 20 km and
42 km), was later increased
to four with the addition
of a 15 km walking race.
Following the enormous
publicity the race generat-
ed, the General Directorate
of Physical Education and
Turkish Athletic Federation
rolled up their sleeves to
transform the event into
a permanent fixture. The
course of the Istanbul
Eurasia Marathon has un-
dergone three route chang-
es since its first run. In re-
cent years, the Marathon
has been run in four differ-
ent races (“Marathon”, “15
km”, “10 km” and “Fun Run”)
and has been organized by
the Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality.

geleneksel bir boyut kazanma-
sı için çaba sarf ettiler. İstanbul
Maratonu başladığı günden
bu yana üç kez güzergâh de-
ğiştirdi. Son yıllarda, 42 kilo-
metre, 15 kilometre, 10 kilo-
metre ve Halk Yürüyüşü olarak
dört farklı güzergâhta koşulan
maraton, İstanbul Büyükşehir
Belediyesi’nin organizatörlü-
ğünde düzenleniyor.
The idea of organizing a mar-
athon race which would be
run from Asia to Europe was
first proposed by Tercüman
newspaper in 1973. However,
this idea was relighted 1978
after the news that a group
of German tourists would be
visiting Istanbul the following
year. What set these German
tourists apart from others
was the fact that they ran
marathon races in the coun-
tries they visited. These tour-
ists who had last run in the
Nile Marathon organized in
Egypt expedited the idea of
organizing a marathon race
to be run from Asia to Europe,
hence Euroasia Marathon.
The event was given an offi-
cial seal of approval with the
invitation of top Turkish ath-
letes to participate in the
marathon with the German
tourists who visited Istanbul
in 1979. Following the com-
pletion of arrangements for
the race course and other
