Turkish boxers were crowned world champions as a team at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships which took place at the Istanbul Başakşehir Sports Complex. In total, our women boxers secured five gold and two bronze medals.
Ayşe Çağırır won gold after defeating Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova in the 48kg final.
Buse Naz Çakıroğlu, who was runner-up at last year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, won gold after defeating Colombia’s Ingrid Valencia Victor in the 50kg final.
In 54kg, Hatice Akbaş bagged another gold for Turkey after defeating Romania’s Lacramioara Perijoc in the final.
Turkey’s Olympic gold medallist, Busenaz Sürmeneli, won her second consecutive World Championship by defeating Canada’s Charlie Cavanagh in the 66kg final by referee decision.
Şennur Demir was also crowned world champion after defeating Morocco’s Khaija Mardi in the 81kg final.
Sema Çalışkan and Elif Güneri managed to secure bronze medals whilst Büşra Işıldar finished in 5th place at the Women’s World Boxing Championships.
After securing a total of seven medals, Turkey was crowned as the team champions whilst Busenaz Sürmeneli was selected as the best boxer of the competition.
